Part I - Figuring the Tax

Form 2290 Line 1 to Line 6 Instruction


Line 1: Month of First Use


Enter the date during which you started operating your taxable heavy vehicle on public highways in a given tax period.


Line 2: Tax


Enter the tax amount. To figure out the tax on line 2, you need to complete the tax computation

the table on Form 2290, page 2.  


Line 3: Additional tax due from an increase in taxable gross weight


Enter an additional tax amount on line 3. You enter this amount only if you notice your vehicle’s taxable gross weight increases and falls under a new category during the tax year. 



Line 4: Total tax


Enter the total tax you owe to IRS in line 4. For this, you need to add lines 2 & 3.


Line 5: Credits


Enter an amount on line 5 only if you’re claiming credits for tax paid on sold, destroyed, or stolen vehicles.


Line 6: Balance due


Enter the balance amount (HVUT) you need to pay to the IRS. For this, you need to Subtract line 5 from line 4. 


Part II- Statement in Support of Suspension

Line 7: Declaring a Suspended vehicle (Category W)


Complete this line only if you expect your vehicle to travel less than 5,000 miles (less than 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period. Check the boxes that apply.

8a - Check the box on line 8a if any of the suspended vehicles that you expect to run less than 5000 miles in the prior year exceeded the mileage use limit. 


8b - Enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicles that exceeded the mileage use limit in the given tax year.


Line 9: If in the prior tax period, Form 2290, line 7, was completed and the tax-suspended vehicles were sold or otherwise transferred, complete line 9.




 

Computing HVUT Taxes


As we discussed above, to figure out the tax on line 2, you need to complete the tax computation table on Form 2290, page 2.  


To complete, you need the following information:

  • Your vehicle’s First Used Month

  • Type and category
